Liverpool have identified former Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso as their preferred successor to replace Arne Slot as head coach, according to Sport Bild.

The report claims the 44-year-old is “ready for Liverpool” at the end of the season, provided a serious offer is made and his conditions are met.

Alonso is said to be demanding a say in transfers and squad planning – something he wasn't granted in his most recent role at Real Madrid, which came to an abrupt end in January after just six months in charge.

Current Liverpool manager Arne Slot is expected to leave by the summer at the latest following an underwhelming campaign.

At the weekend, the defending Premier League champions suffered a 2-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion – their 10th league loss of the season.

Alonso, a former Bayern Munich player, led Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title as head coach in the 2023/24 season.
