2. Bundesliga: Matchday 2 Predictions

Here are previews and predictions for all 9 games on the second weekend of the 2. Bundesliga 2022/23 season.
SC Paderborn at Fortuna Düsseldorf

In one of the more enticing games of the weekend, Düsseldorf will have their hands full in trying to stop this opposing attack on Friday night. Paderborn will control possession and look to put on another show with 5 different goal-scorers last weekend. But Düsseldorf can cover some serious ground to stick with Paderborn, as they recorded a league-high of 743 intensive runs on Matchday 1.

Prediction: SC Paderborn 2 - Fortuna Düsseldorf 2

SV Sandhausen at SV Darmstadt

David Kinsombi scored 2 for Sandhausen who are coming off a surprise victory over 10-man Bielefeld in a feisty contest where they received 7 yellow cards. Darmstadt center-back Patric Pfeiffer received his own red card in the 37th minute last weekend, as they failed to score in a loss to Regensburg. This is why we love this league. You simply never know.

Prediction: SV Sandhausen 1 - SV Darmstadt 2

Eintracht Braunschweig at FC Heidenheim

Braunschweig recorded a league-high of 24 shots at home to Hamburg last week with only 32% of the ball. And how many goals did they score? 0. This time around, they might put a couple away.

Prediction: Eintracht Braunschweig 2 - FC Heidenheim 1

FC Kaiserslautern at Holstein Kiel

It was a Friday night to remember on Matchday 1 for Kaiserslautern as they won their first game back in the 2. Bundesliga after 4 dreadful years away. But, Holstein can play as new defender Timo Becker is already on the scoresheet. Can Kaiserslautern sneak out with another victory? It feels unlikely.

Prediction: FC Kaiserslautern 1 - Holstein Kiel 1

SpVgg Greuther Fürth at FC Nürnberg

Nürnberg narrowly lost to St. Pauli in an entertaining match that lived up to the hype on Matchday 1. This club has an exciting young squad that loves to progress forward at every possible opportunity. More goals are coming against a Fürth team that are still looking to find their identity in the club’s return to the second division.

Prediction: SpVgg Greuther Fürth 1 - FC Nürnberg 3

FC St. Pauli at Hannover

In this massive game between desperate clubs, St. Pauli will look to carry over their excellent play to Hannover who are reeling after a loss to Kaiserslautern. Daniel-Kofi Kyereh’s move to Freiburg doesn’t seem too damaging for St. Pauli (*yet), as they’ll be happy to sit back if Hannover wish to take control of possession. Stefan Leitl should be able to squeak out at least 1 point from this game, right?

Prediction: FC St. Pauli 2 - Hannover 2

FC Magdeburg at Karlsruher SC

Although we’re only 1 week into the season, it does seem that both of these squads need to pick up 3 points from games like this to avoid relegation. Karlsruher were pounded 5-0 to Paderborn last weekend, but now face a much easier opponent. No matter the week, every point matters in this league. It still feels like both clubs will mess this up and walk away shaking their heads.

Prediction: FC Magdeburg 1 - Karlsruher SC 1

SSV Jahn Regensburg at DSC Arminia Bielefeld

Bielefeld were down to 10 men last weekend and lost in their return back down in the second division. On the other hand, Regensburg are riding high after their win over Darmstadt. Look for Bielefeld to bounce back at home against an inferior squad.

Prediction: SSV Jahn Regensburg 0 - DSC Arminia Bielefeld 2

FC Hansa Rostock at Hamburger SV

Hamburg leads the league with 67% possession and will continue to have much of the ball against Rostock who don’t mind playing on the counter. Striker Robert Glatzel scored 2 goals last time around as Hamburg’s talent will outlast Hansa in a difficult battle.

Prediction: FC Hansa Rostock 0 - Hamburger SV 1
