Report: Xabi Alonso the favorite to replace Seoane

Per ESPN, if Leverkusen do fire Gerardo Seoane, former Bayern Munich star Xabi Alonso is likely to become their new head coach.

Xabi Alonso is at the top of Leverkusen's list to replace Gerardo Seoane, according to an ESPN report. Alonso was a youth coach at Real Madrid and was in charge of Real Sociedad's second team from 2019 until this year.

However, the 40-year-old has no experience coaching a first division team. Alonso played for Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich during his illustrious career.

It's been a disastrous start to the season for Leverkusen, who sit 17th in the Bundesliga with just one league win thus far. The company club previously contacted Thomas Tuchel about the position, but he has declined.

It's unclear whether Seoane will still be in charge when Leverkusen face Schalke on Saturday.
