Bayern München CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said he was 'deeply embarrassed' by offensive banners unveiled by the club's travelling fans towards the end of Saturday's 6-0 win over Hoffenheim at the PreZero Arena.

The game was suspended with 13 minutes left after Bayern fans directed hateful banners at Hoffenheim chief Dietmar Hopp. After a little break, the players returned to the pitch and ran down the clock by passing the ball between themselves to take a stand against the actions of the Bayern fans.

"From the point of view of FC Bayern, I am deeply embarrassed about these idiots. I have to say this: as of today, the moment has come when the whole Bundesliga, the DFB and the DFL have to join together and act against idiots like these," Rummenigge said after the game, as per an interview posted on Bayern's website, and added:

" Football's ugly side reared its head here today. I am also deeply embarrassed on behalf of Dietmar Hopp, who is a man of honour and has ensured that not just football but sport across the board in this region has been seen in a positive light. I have also apologised to him.

"However, what happened in the away end is really inexcusable. This is an ugly side of Bayern at a game that was in fact a great day for our team. There is no excuse for these actions. Everything was caught on camera and we will take the firmest of action against those responsible who tarnished the name of FC Bayern today. At the end of the day, they will be made accountable for their actions," the Bayern chief said.
