Union sign Skarke to contract extension

FC Union Berlin confirmed a contract extension for attacker Tim Skarke early Friday evening.

Recent returned from his second consecutive loan out, Union Berlin attacking midfielder/winger Tim Skarke appears set to finally play more of a regular role for his German capital city parent club. The 28-year-old - mostly regarded as a left rail player for most of his career - never really fit in with the system of previous 1. FC Union Berlin trainer Urs Fischer.

After signing on a free from Heidenheim in the summer of 2022, Skarke made only five appearances in a Union tricot over the course of two seasons. He was heavily linked with a move away from die Eisernen this past summer. It nevertheless now appears as if FCU trainer Urs Fischer might have some use  for the Heidenheim native.

Skarke picked up an assist off the bench in the opening draw against Mainz. Svensson tapped Skarke for a start in last week's 0-0 draw with Leipzig. Skarke has actually logged minutes in all four Union competitive fixtures this year. The terms of Spark's new deal were not disclosed, but club managing director Horst Heldt did issue a statement.

“We are retaining a player who shows full commitment every day," Heldt's statement read, "whether in training or in a game, we're glad to have Tim with us."
