Zeidler declares Miyoshi ready for minutes against Freiburg
Koji Miyoshi | VfL Bochum |
After securing another season of top flight German football only via the promotion-relegation playoffs last spring, VfL Bochum have gotten off to an atrocious start to the 2024/25 campaign under new rookie trainer Peter Zeidler. The 1848ers have generated fewer scoring chances than any other Bundesliga team. The Rebvierklub also have the dubious honor of - along with newly promoted 1. FC St. Pauli - being one of two top division sides yet to score a goal.
Early trends for Zeidler's team could very well prove aberrant, however, in light of the fact that the VfL administrative team have done quite a bit to bolster the attack over the course of the offseason. The final addition to this summer's long list, creative Japanese playmaker Koji Miyoshi, may potentially be ready to make an impact against Freiburg this weekend. Miyoshi was among those who performed well in a 3-1 win over Rot-Weiß Essen in a test fixture over the international break.
Miyoshi actually went the full 90 minutes in the exhibition match. Speaking at his Friday pre-match presser, Zeidler didn't explicitly commit to a start for the 27-year-old in tomorrow's trip to Breisgau, but still let it be known that the five-times-capped Samurai international would soon play a very important role for the team. The former Birmingham City professional can be deployed just about anywhere in attack. Zeidler compared Miyoshi favorably to Bochum veteran player and coach Darius Wosz.
"He's a lot like Wosz," Zeidler remarked at the presser, "It can be expected that he will definitely get some playing time."
