Report: Bayern identify new top candidate for coaching job

According to Bild's 'Bayern Insider' podcast, Roger Schmidt has emerged as a top candidate in Bayern Munich's search for a new coach.

After being turned down by Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick, Bayern Munich must now focus on a new candidate in their search for a new coach.

According to Bild's 'Bayern Insider' podcast, the Bavarians could make a move for Roger Schmidt, with sources in the agent industry claiming that the Bavarians want to "go all out" for the Benfica coach.

After winning the league last season, Schmidt and Benfica have been less successful this term and currently sit five points behind city rivals Sporting CP at the top of the Portuguese Liga.

With that in mind, there could be an opening for Bayern to convince Benfica to let the 57-year-old leave two years before his contract expires. Schmidt has a reported release clause of €30 million, but Bayern are likely to try to negotiate the price down.

The podcast mentions Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag as an alternative candidate. The former Bayern youth coach is said to be open to a return to Munich, but it is highly doubtful that Bayern will want to make a move for the 54-year-old given his struggles at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Munich-based publication TZ reports that Brighton & Hove Albion manager Robert Di Zerbi, who has been linked with Bayern for some time, is their top priority.
