After Borussia Dortmund captain Emre Can recently suffered a season-ending ACL tear, reports suggested the club still want to extend his contract, which expires at the end of the season.

Speaking to local publication WAZ, BVB managing director for sport Lars Ricken has now confirmed that the 32-year-old will be offered a new deal.

“It is an extremely bitter diagnosis for Emre and the entire club. He has been the undisputed captain of our team not only under Niko Kovac but also under (former Borussia Dortmund coaches) Nuri Sahin and Edin Terzic,” Ricken said.

“The way he takes care of his teammates with such responsibility is impressive. We have enormous respect for Emre. That is why we want to support him beyond June 30 on his path to a comeback and extend his expiring contract.”

Can’s contract is expected to be extended by one year, with the club planning to sit down with him after his upcoming surgery.

“Once Emre has successfully undergone the operation, we will sit down with him to discuss the matter further,” Ricken added.
