According to Kicker, the highly rated Serbian talent is already en route to Germany, with a medical in Saxony expected to follow shortly. While the final details of the deal have yet to be confirmed, a €14m fee is being reported.

The 18-year-old attacking midfielder made his professional debut for Red Star at just 16 years old, having already made waves in the club’s youth setup. At the time, he was widely regarded as one of Serbia’s brightest emerging prospects.

Maksimović’s rapid rise continued in 2024 when he made his senior debut for the Serbia national team at just 17 years, four months, and seven days old - becoming the youngest player ever to represent Serbia in an official competitive match.

Despite his age, Maksimović arrives in Leipzig already boasting significant top-level experience. He has made 41 first-team appearances for Red Star, including seven in the Champions League.

Transfer rumours surrounding the teenager have been circulating for months, with several major European clubs reportedly interested. Leipzig now appear to have beaten off competition from the likes of Liverpool, PSG, and West Ham - who have all shown interest in the past.

With three signings already confirmed and PSV’s Johan Bakayoko reportedly close to joining, Maksimović could become Leipzig’s fifth addition of the summer as the club aims to return to European competition next season.
