Lukas Podolski wants to play for Germany at the Olympics in 2020

Lukas Podolski would be willing to help Germany at the Olympics in 2020 if the opportunity arises.
Lukas Podolski says he would be interested in lining up for the German football team at the Olympics in 2020 which will be held in Japan where the 34-year-old is currently playing for Vissel Kobe.

The former FC Köln player, who made 130 appearances and scored 49 goals for Germany's senior national team before his international retirement in 2017, is eager to be part of the Olympics squad if possible.

"Of course I'd be up for playing at the Olympics. That's something great for every athlete. If there's interest, I'm ready to talk to those responsible," Podolski said in an interview with Sport Bild.

Three players born before the 1st of January 1997 are allowed to be part of the 18-man squad. Germany under-21 coach Stefan Kuntz, who will be responsible for Germany's Olympics team, says he plans to initially find the players born in 1997 or later that he wants to call up.

"After holding talks with the clubs, we will put together a provisional squad consisting of players born in 1997 or later. Then we will not which positions we still have to fill and whether we still need the qualities of older players that the squad cannot cover," Kuntz told Sport Bild.
