Out of 14 German-based players in the squad, Ralf Rangnick picked eight of them in Austria's starting lineup against Jordan. While the European side return to the big stage for the first time since 1998, this will be the first-ever World Cup game for Jordan.

Goalkeeper Alexander Schlager and former Bundesliga stars David Alaba (FC Bayern, Hoffenheim) and Saša Kalajdžić (VfB Stuttgart) are the only players to currently play club football outside Germany from Austria's XI. That will be the same number of Bundesliga players in a lineup to Germany’s 7-1 win over Curaçao on Sunday.

Austria aim for a first win in the stage since their 2-1 success over the United States in 1990. Curaçao and Cape Verde registered their first goal and point, respectively, on their World Cup debuts in the past few days. The fourth debutants Uzbekistan will be at the last game of matchday 1 against Luis Diaz's Colombia.
