FC Bayern München's second major blockbuster signing of the summer is now official. Dutch international Matthijs de Ligt put pen to paper on a contract with Germany's record champions good through 2027 on Tuesday evening. The Bavarians have secured the most expensive central defender in the world for a €67 million transfer fee, which can rise well above €80 million if performance incentives are met.

"Matthijs de Ligt was a big target for us," FCB President Herbert Hainer remarked on the signing, "With such transfers, the lofty goals we are pursuing are possible. The face of our future team becomes ever clearer and this transfer is an important building block in the overall concept that we are implementing step-by-step."

"I am very happy to become a player of this grand club," the player himself added in a statement on the club's website, "FC Bayern is the most successful club in Germany, as well as one of the most successful clubs in Europe and the world. I am very happy that I will now become part of the history of FC Bayern."

"With this transfer, we bring our defense up to the absolute top level," chairmen Oliver Kahn noted in his published statement, "Matthijs learned how to take responsibility at a very young age and has led the way on every team he's played for."
