The 30-year-old has said on several occasions that he considers himself to be the best German striker, and in April he said that he felt absolutely sure to be called up for the World Cup. Wagner now says that he feels his straightforwardness hasn't been greeted well by the coaching staff of the national team.
"I hereby retire from the national team. It seems obvious to me that I don't fit with the coaching team with my way of saying things in a clear, honest and direct way. I wish the guys all the best in Russia, and I hope they return as world champions," he tells Bild.
Wagner has made eight appearances for the national team and scored five goals.
