VfL Wolfsburg's Wout Weghorst has confirmed reports that Tottenham were interested in landing him during the recently closed transfer window.

The 28-year-old spoke about the interest from England in an interview with Kicker, in which the striker also reveals he turned down West Ham to join Wolfsburg from Dutch side AZ two years ago.

"I can be honest and say I knew there was interest in me. With Tottenham, it was serious. I was a candidate. Of course, something like that occupies you. It's also a confirmation that I'm on the right track," Weghorst said and added:

"I've always said that in the end, it has to be right for all parties. That wasn't the case. This is why I stayed in Wolfsburg with all my love. At the end of the transfer window, I was glad that it was over. My family is happy to stay in Wolfsburg as well.

"Nevertheless, the Premier League is still a dream for me. Two years ago, I decided to play for VfL instead of West Ham United."

Weghorst's contract with Wolfsburg expires in 2023.
