Reports: Anfang set to work Lautern bench

Sky Germany and Kicker Magazine both report that 1. FC Kaiserslautern have settled on their choice of a new head-coach.

The FC Kaiserslautern head-coaching chair vacated by Friedhelm Funkel following Saturday night's DFB Pokal final is reportedly set to be filled by Markus Anfang. This was initially reported by Sky Germany earlier in the day and is now being confirmed by Germany's preeminent footballing publication. Anfang is set to succeed Funkel in what will be the 49-year-old's sixth head-coaching assignment. Anfang previously worked the trainer bench for Kiel, Köln, Darmstadt, Bremen, and Dynamo Dresden.

Anfang - who played for Lautern between 2002 and 2004 - most recently coached Dresden from the summer of 2022 until he was sacked this past April. The Köln-native is known for famously falsifying his vacation certificate during a brief spell in charge of Bremen at the start of the 2021/22 season. His coaching license was temporarily suspended by the DFB as a result of the incident. Anfang's tenure with the 3. Liga side was his most successful - on a win-percentage basis - since his 11-month-stint with his hometown club between 2018 and 2019.
