Borussia Mönchengladbach's efforts to retain the services of Austrian center back Maximilian Wöber are - according to German transfer guru Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany - centering around a new loan-out. The 26-year-old is due back in Yorkshire after his season-long loan deal expired. The 28-times-capped international's parent club of Leeds United wants €10-12 million for a permanent transfer; a fee beyond the budget of the foals.
Faced with the prospect of losing both Wöber and Swiss central defender Nico Elvedi this offseason, Gladbach are also reportedly looking within the Bundesliga for additional candidates in the defensive corps. Plettenberg also reports that versatile defender Bernardo of VfL Bochum is on sporting director Roland Virkus' list. The Brazilian featured 33 times in the league for the Revierklub this past season.
Bernardo's many notable performances both as a left back and central defender has seen his estimated market worth pumped up to €5.5 million in the latest transfermarkt update. The 2023/24 Bundesliga promotion-relegation playoff winners may potentially be interested in cashing in on the player they reportedly paid only €600,000 for last summer. Plettenberg reports that talks with Bernardo have been initiated.
