Earlier this week, Robert Glatzel spoke to Hamburger Morgenpost without informing the club beforehand, openly voicing frustration over his reduced role in the team. Among his comments, the 32-year-old stated: “I don’t want to start any fires.” However, the interview has had the opposite effect, drawing an immediate response from within the club with the striker absent as the HSV squad set off to Dortmund for this weekend’s Topspiel.
Head coach Merlin Polzin addressed the situation during Thursday’s press conference, making it clear that while he understood the player’s feelings, the way in which they were expressed crossed a line.
“It’s perfectly legitimate for players with limited playing time to be dissatisfied and express this,” said Polzin. “The other issue is the method used. Bobby consciously chose to do it this way. And these are things that are not in line with our rules and our attitude within the club.”
Following the interview, Glatzel was required to hold discussions not only with the coaching staff but also with sporting director Claus Costa. A financial penalty is expected, although the precise figure has yet to be confirmed.
“I found clear words to put this matter to rest,” Polzin announced on Thursday. “I told him that, in my view, it’s not the right way to speak without prior consultation.” Since this was “not in line with our position,” Glatzel also had to have discussions “at a higher level.”
While Polzin stopped short of confirming any immediate sporting consequences at that stage, action was taken soon after, with the forward now set to miss the upcoming fixture. The decision is understood to be part of a broader effort to reinforce standards and accountability within the squad.
Despite the setback, the situation is not expected to have long-term ramifications. Reports indicate that Glatzel will only be sidelined for one match, giving him the opportunity to regain his place during the international break and beyond. Polzin had already said on Thursday: “For me, it was important that I had an open and clarifying conversation with Bobby, and it’s not as if he’s being banned because of this.”
