Last summer, Granit Xhaka left Bayer Leverkusen after a successful two-year spell with the club to join Sunderland. Now, it seems he is keen to move on after just one season with the Black Cats.

According to Sky Germany, the 33-year-old central midfielder has reached a verbal agreement with Chelsea over a summer transfer.

Chelsea are now understood to be in talks with Sunderland, where Xhaka is still under contract until 2028.

Xhaka moved to Sunderland from Bayer Leverkusen for around €15 million, and a transfer this summer could be completed for a similar fee.

The Swiss international could reunite with Xabi Alonso, under whom he played at Bayer Leverkusen, winning the domestic double in the 2023/24 season.

Xabi Alonso is officially set to begin his tenure as Chelsea head coach on July 1.
