Here are the wildest contests from the 2021/22 Bundesliga campaign.
This was the perfect commercial for the Bundesliga. An incredible back-and-forth battle with some world-class goals between two heavyweight sides in front of a raucous Leverkusen crowd. Florian Wirtz, Patrik Schick and Moussa Diaby all scored while Dortmund added some impressive strikes from Julian Brandt and Raphaël Guerreiro. In the end, Dortmund roared back to take all 3 points with an Erling Haaland brace in a match worth every bit of what it was hyped up to be.
Matchday 13: Hoffenheim 6-3 Greuther Fürth
The goals just wouldn’t stop. The highest-scoring game of the season was so much fun. Even during Fürth’s dismal campaign, their fans surely had a good time watching this nonstop scoring fest. Ihlas Bebou had a hat-trick and Georginio Rutter added a brace including a stunning strike into the top corner. 9 goals. Now that is what the people want to see.
Matchday 14: SC Freiburg 6-0 Borussia Mönchengladbach
The sheer absurdness of what happened on Matchday 14 is why this contest easily makes the list. All 6 of Freiburg’s goals were scored within the first 37 minutes, including 4 from set-piece play. That is laughable. Freiburg led the league with 19 set-piece goals which is mainly due to this performance. It was a flawless display as the Breisgau club rolled right through Yann Sommer and Gladbach’s sorry defense.
Matchday 22: VfL Bochum 4-2 Bayern Munich
Bochum secured their first win over the Bavarian club in nearly 20 years with a shocking performance that no one would have predicted. Cristian Gamboa scored a rocket while Gerrit Holtmann added a super curler. Emphatically throttling the Bayern machine in front of their faithful supporters in the first season back in the league? Bochum’s dreams never got this far.
Matchday 34: VfB Stuttgart 2-1 FC Köln
A match straight from a movie. The odds were not in Stuttgart’s favor to begin the day as they needed a win and a Hertha Berlin loss to survive. The game was a 90-minute heart attack for Stuttgart fans as Saša Kalajdžić missed a penalty, but then quickly redeemed himself with a headed goal. Anthony Modeste tied the game in the 59th minute and with all hope seemingly lost, Wataru Endo somehow scored a 92nd minute stunner to save Stuttgart from a catastrophic relegation.
The fans rushed the pitch and scenes of pure happiness ensued. After so many difficult months without any supporters present, what happened to this storied club on the final matchday would make any football fan tear up. This was the perfect ending to the toughest of seasons. Hollywood couldn’t write a better movie than this.
