Germany striker Niclas Füllkrug was emotional after being knocked out of the Euros after extra time in the quarter-finals.
Speaking to German television after the game, the BVB striker had a message for the fans.
"It was an honor to fight for you on the pitch. It's a shame it only lasted until the quarter-finals, but you were definitely outstanding," said Füllkrug.
“Before the European Championship, I didn't think you could get that feeling in Germany again. It's difficult for me at the moment.”
The 31-year-old also said he would need time to get over the disappointment of being knocked out of the tournament.
“It's just sad that it's over. There was a euphoria, a sense of togetherness in the country. There's no pride now, it's over. It's harder to realize every second. You can't avoid your feelings now. In the end, nothing helps at the moment. It's brutally hard to deal with. No excuses will help. It will take some time,” he said.
