Earlier today, Bayern München announced that Uli Hoeness will not stand for re-election as Bayern München president at the club's general meeting in November.
Speaking at a press conference today, the 67-year-old explained why he has opted to step down from the position.
"This decision wasn't made quickly, it has grown over time. Over the last few years, I've been thinking more and more," Hoeness said, as quoted by the club.
"It has always been my goal to leave the club in the best possible shape, both on and off the pitch.
"Differences of opinion with [Bayern CEO] Karl-Heinz Rummenigge haven't played a role in this decision. Friction brings success. I would never leave this position because of a difference in opinion," Hoeness explained.
Former Adidas chairman Herbert Hainer is set to take over the job, and Hoeness is confident the club is in safe hands.
"Anyone who can lead a company like Adidas is capable of leading FC Bayern," Hoeness said, according to the club, and added:
"The decisions made in the last few days have set the club on the right path for the future."
Bayern München also announced that Oliver Kahn will join the club's Executive Board at the beginning of 2020, with the former goalkeeper set to take over as chairman and CEO from Karl-Heinz Rummenigge when his contract expires on 31 December 2021.
"I have followed Oliver Kahn's development closely. We had regular contact after his retirement. At some point everything just clicked, and we decided that Oliver is the right man for the job," Hoeness said about the appointment of Kahn, as quoted by the club.
