Bayer Leverkusen would like to extend Alejandro Grimaldo's contract early, but this is currently proving difficult reports BILD.

However, there are strong indications that Grimaldo will remain in Leverkusen beyond the summer – the club chiefs are also optimistic.

The influential Spaniard is said to feel extremely comfortable with the Rhineland club who currently sit third in the Bundesliga table.

His standing within the team and the considerable freedom he enjoys under Kasper Hjulmand are advantageous to him.

Therefore, an extension at a later date cannot be ruled out for the 30-year-old who often mans the left flank for Leverkusen.

Grimaldo has proven highly effective once again this season, contributing 9 goals and 5 assists in 20 games across all competitions.

As recently as mid-November, La Liga champions Barcelona and Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich were interested in Grimaldo
