The serious ankle injury Jamal Musiala suffered last summer can't be "rehabilitated casually," says Bayern boss Max Eberl.

After recovering from the horrific ankle injury he suffered at last summer’s Club World Cup, Jamal Musiala suffered a setback in Bayern Munich’s 6-1 win over Atalanta around a month ago.

As a result, Musiala missed three matches for Bayern, as well as Germany’s fixtures during the March international break, before making his return off the bench in Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Freiburg.

Ahead of Bayern Munich’s Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash with Real Madrid in Spain, Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl explained that the injury is not one the German international can quickly move on from – physically or mentally.

“He had problems again after the game in Bergamo, where adhesions appeared in his ankle,” Eberl told reporters ahead of Bayern’s flight to Madrid.

“It’s not all perfectly clean and pristine, but surgically treated and still tender,” he added.

“There’s a lot of physical strain, but the soul and psyche are also involved. This isn’t an injury that can be rehabilitated casually.”

After providing fresh impetus off the bench against Freiburg, Musiala could potentially have a role to play at the Bernabéu on Tuesday.

“It’s about whether he feels ready at the moment. That’s the impression he gave us on Saturday, so we’re happy he’s part of the squad for the Bernabéu,” Eberl said.
