It’s long been an open secret, but now it’s official: Xabi Alonso will take over as Real Madrid head coach this summer, succeeding Carlo Ancelotti.
The La Liga giants have confirmed that the Spaniard, who is stepping down as Bayer Leverkusen coach, will return to his former club on a contract running until the summer of 2028.
According to Kicker, Leverkusen will receive €12-15 million from Real Madrid to let Xabi Alonso go.
Since taking charge of Leverkusen in October 2022, the former Spain international has enjoyed remarkable success, winning the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and German Super Cup.
Alonso will arrive in Madrid with the ambition to build on his success in Germany and deliver remarkable results at the Bernabéu.
