Vincent Kompany praised the determination shown by FC Bayern Munich after their intense 1-1 draw with Bayer 04 Leverkusen, describing his side’s mentality as the standout positive from a turbulent evening.
“I’m incredibly proud of the team’s mentality today,” Kompany said after the final whistle.
The Bayern coach emphasised how the match featured several decisive moments that shaped the flow of the game, noting that not every situation was interpreted in the same way by everyone involved.
“Many things happened,” he explained. “There were phases where you could have different opinions, and those situations influenced the game.”
One of the key turning points came when Nicolas Jackson was shown a red card, leaving Bayern to play much of the match with ten men. “We got a red card out of nowhere. There’s no discussion about that,” Kompany said, while suggesting other decisions during the match were more debatable.
In particular, the Bayern coach questioned the dismissal of Luis Díaz late in the match. “There’s discussion about Lucho’s red card,” he said. “I can’t understand it.”
Kompany also pointed to two attacking situations involving Bayern that were ultimately ruled out, expressing confusion about both decisions.
Reflecting on the disallowed effort from Jonathan Tah and a goal scored by Harry Kane, the coach suggested that the circumstances made the rulings difficult to accept from Bayern’s perspective.
“If you’ve played football, you know what I’m talking about,” Kompany said.
Despite the frustration surrounding several moments in the match, the Bayern coach returned to his main takeaway from the game: the character his team showed under difficult circumstances.
“As I said, I’m proud,” Kompany concluded. “But there were situations where we can have different opinions.”
