Schalke 04 head coach Kees van Wonderen made a public announcement regarding the controversial goalkeeping dilemma at the club.

The boss revealed that Loris Karius will start between the sticks for the Royal Blues who take on Preussen Munster tomorrow.

"We have chosen Loris in goal. We all know what experience he brings with him from all his years in the professional field.

“He has been with us for almost two months now and is getting into the rhythm better and better. We believe that he can now help us with his experience and his performance," van Wonderen said.

The news comes as a surprise given Schalke’s regular first-choice Justin Heekeren had played 21 of their 23 games until this juncture.

Van Wonderen noted the shot-stopper’s disappointment, stating there is competition for the spot now and it wasn’t a straightforward decision.

The game against Munster is also significant for Deniz Aytekin - the German referee makes his return after a lengthy injury layoff.
