Germany thought they had gone 2-1 up in extra time of Monday’s dramatic round of 32 World Cup clash with Paraguay when Jonathan Tah headed the ball into the net, but the goal was ruled out.
Referee Jalal Jayed initially allowed the goal to stand but was then sent to the monitor by the video assistant referee. After a review lasting more than three minutes, he decided to disallow the goal, ruling that Waldemar Anton had committed a foul on Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
After Germany went on to lose the match on penalties, head coach Julian Nagelsmann strongly criticised the decision.
“It’s a scandal that he overturned that decision,” Nagelsmann said on ZDF after the game.
“It’s not just a scandal, it’s a complete scandal. I have no idea what he saw there, it’s really a joke. That is not even remotely a foul.”
Tah also gave his view on the incident:
“For me, that wasn't a foul. But in the end, we have to accept the referee’s decision. There’s no point in arguing about it. We have to look at ourselves and take responsibility for the decisions we made,” said the centre-back.
