Although he featured in the majority of Hertha's games through last season, Serdar wasn't satisfied with his first season in Berlin.
"A lot happened last season. The year was a new experience for me. I'm sure things will get better now," he told Kicker and added:
"Berlin hasn't even seen the real Serdar yet."
Serdar highlighted a change of position as a factor in his struggles.
"Playing out of position was tough. I struggled with the change of coach and position change to the wing," said the central midfielder, who mostly played as a winger after Pal Dardai was sacked.
Dardai was replaced by Tayfun Korkut, who only lasted a few months before Felix Magath was put in charge instead. Serdar is now looking forward to playing under Sandro Schwarz, his former coach at Mainz, again.
"We now have a coach, who – like me – believes No. 8 is my best position. I'm very happy about that," said the midfielder.
