Mainz boss reiterates support for under-fire Svensson

Even though Mainz are bottom of the Bundesliga with just one point from five games, sporting director Martin Schmidt remains confident that Bo Svensson is the right coach for the club.
Pressure is mounting on Mainz coach Bo Svensson, whose side are bottom of the Bundesliga with one point from five games after Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Augsburg.

However, Mainz sporting director Martin Schmidt remains confident that Svensson can lead the team out of the slump.

"The coach has done a great job for two and a half years. Now we have to show something different and he will grow from this," Schmidt told DPA.

With Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich among Mainz's next three opponents, it will be tough for Die Nullfünfer to turn things around.

"Those who know Mainz 05 know that these are exactly the games in which we outgrow ourselves. I'm convinced: the team will come out of it, Bo will find the trigger point and the solutions," said Schmidt.

Svensson was particularly unhappy with his defense after yesterday's defeat.

"The opponent has to do extremely little to score against us," he fumed in a post-match interview.

"It is very, very bitter to lose like this. The opponent had two scoring chances and scored two goals. But it was also defended badly," Svensson added.

"That's not good enough if you want to win games in the Bundesliga."
