Mainz have announced that René Adler will hang up his boots at the end of the 2018/19 season.

The 34-year-old, who joined Mainz from Hamburger SV in 2017, has seen his time at the club severely hampered by injuries, and he has now decided to retire.

"I would have loved to have played more games, but my time in Mainz, other than my injury, has been wonderful. I have been really happy to be here and have loved the people, the city and the region," Adler said, as quoted by the club.

Adler, who played for Bayer Leverkusen and Hamburger SV in the past, made a total of 269 Bundesliga appearances during his career. He also played 12 games for the German national team.
