David Wagner believes Schalke have a chance of keeping Alex Nübel

Schalke 04 David Wagner remains hopeful that Alexander Nübel will sign a new deal with the club.
Schalke 04 coach David Wagner says he believes the club have a real chance of keeping Alexander Nübel beyond 2020.

The highly-rated goalkeeper is out of contract at the end of the season, and the Schalke bosses are doing all they can to convince him to sign a new deal.

"I believe we have a chance. That's my feeling from the talks we've had," Schalke coach David Wagner told Sport Bild.

Nübel, who has mainly been linked with Bayern München, currently earns €600,000 a year, but Schalke would reportedly be willing to increase his annual salary to as much as €6 million if he pens a new deal until 2024.

That's more than Bayern München would be prepared to offer him, as per the report, which also claims that money isn't the most important factor for the 23-year-old.

Should Nübel sign a contract extension, his new deal would most likely include a purchase option that would make it possible for him to leave the club for €20 million in 2021.

Under all circumstances, the 23-year-old will definitely be keeping an eye on the goalkeeper situation at Bayern München as he wouldn't want to make the switch to the Bavarian club just to sit on the bench.

The German champions just extended the contract of reserve keeper Christian Früchtl until 2022 and are reportedly ready to offer Manuel Neuer a new deal beyond 2021. Should that happen, it definitely wouldn't weaken Schalke's chances of keeping their captain a little longer.
