Schalke introduce self-imposed salary cap
After bringing in a self-imposed salary cap of €2.5 million-a-year, Schalke 04 will no longer be able to attract 'a certain category of players,' admits club boss Jochen Schneider.
Schalke 04 have introduced a salary cap of €2.5 million per season in a move to build a healthier financial future for the club.
While the salaries of many of the current Schalke players are well above the self-imposed limit, the club want to keep all annual wages below €2.5 million in the foreseeable future.
"The logical consequence of our self-imposed guidelines is that a certain category of players will no longer be an option for us. We were of course aware of this when we made our decision," Schalke 04 head of sport Jochen Schneider told Sport Bild.
"We need players, who are hungry and who totally identify with Schalke 04," added the Schalke boss.
It only appears to be a matter of time before Schalke will announce their first summer signing, with Freiburg goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow understood to be on the verge of a move to Veltins-Arena.
