Mainz coach Bo Henriksen hopes to have Jonathan Burkardt back "very soon" after the striker was forced off during Tuesday's 1-0 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen.

The 24-year-old pulled his left thigh after a sprint and was substituted shortly after the game had started.

The injury is particularly bitter as Burkardt only returned from a spell on the sidelines at the weekend to score both of Mainz's goals in a 2-0 win over Bochum.

"I spoke to him. It's not as bad as last time," Henriksen said in a post-match interview.

“Hopefully he'll be back soon. But we won't know until the scan. But I think Johnny will be back very soon.”

Whether Burkardt will be fit enough to face Union Berlin later this week remains to be seen, with Armindo Sieb ready to step in if necessary.
