1. FC Köln centre-back Luca Kilian has suffered another devastating injury setback.

As the Bundesliga club confirmed on Tuesday, the 26-year-old has suffered his third cruciate ligament tear in 18 months and will face many months on the sidelines.

According to Bild, the former Paderborn player may even have to retire from football as a result of the injury.

“Luca’s renewed cruciate ligament injury affects us all deeply,” said 1. FC Köln sporting director Thomas Kessler, expressing his shock at the news.

"It is incredibly bitter that he is now facing such a serious injury for the third time. As the FC family, we will support him closely, provide the best possible assistance, and make sure he finds the strength needed to overcome this setback.

“Luca is a fighter – as he has repeatedly proven in the past. This quality will help him navigate this difficult journey as well.”
