Werder Bremen have announced that captain Marco Friedl has renewed his contract with the club.

While the exact length of the deal has not been disclosed, the Green-Whites stated that the centre-back will remain at the club “for years ahead”.

“We’re very pleased that Marco has decided to continue his journey with Werder. This sends out a strong signal and shows how much he identifies with our club. Marco is an important pillar of the team as captain. In the future, he’ll continue to be one of the players we try to build an exciting and promising team around,” said head of professional football Peter Niemeyer.

Friedl, 27, shared his excitement about the extension, noting the strong bond he has developed with the club over the years.

“After seven years in Bremen, I’m now one of the longest-serving players at the club and have been there for all of the ups and downs during that time. That obviously brought us closer together, and I’m already feeling a lot of emotions.

"We’ve been constantly improving as a team over the past few years, and there’s still more to come. I’m fully on board with the plans the club have for the team, and I’m really looking forward to what’s to come," he said.
