In his first press conference since arriving at Werder Bremen, new signing Maximilian Wöber discussed his future and ambitions.

The Austrian said he contacted his trio of compatriots at Bremen in Marco Friedl, Marco Grüll and Romano Schmid before the move.

“Naturally, I chatted with the guys about how it is here [in Bremen], how they feel and if they have any tips on living arrangements and 'hot spots’.

“I definitely wanted to join Werder because something is happening here,” said the 27-year-old centre-half.

Wöber also touched on a particularly difficult period in his career as he underwent two separate knee surgeries in recent months and his longing for a return to the Bundesrepublik.

“A long period of suffering is over. It was tough. Things didn’t work out the way the doctors and I imagined. But now I’m training at full-throttle.

“Every match in the Bundesliga is a battle. My goal was get back to the Bundesliga. The intensity. The atmosphere in the stadiums. Germany is paradise for a footballer," he added.
