VfL Wolfsburg are working on a deal to sign Andrei Ratiu from Rayo Vallecano, according to both Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) and Romanian outlet Digi Sport.

The 27-year-old right-back has a €25 million release clause in his contract – a fee Wolfsburg are reportedly unwilling to meet.

Die Wölfe reportedly had an initial offer of around €12-14 million rejected by the Spanish club, with Digi Sport stating that a second, improved bid was also turned down.

Negotiations are further complicated by the fact that Ratiu’s former club Villarreal still owns 50 percent of his transfer rights and also holds a buy-back clause set at €8 million.

Given the complexity of a permanent transfer and the difficulties in agreeing on a fee, Wolfsburg are now exploring a potential loan deal, according to WAZ.

AS Roma and Tottenham Hotspur are also said to be monitoring the Romanian international.
