After being named in Borussia Dortmund’s starting lineup for Saturday’s Bundesliga clash with Mainz, Serhou Guirassy was forced to withdraw shortly before kickoff due to a thigh problem.

Fortunately for BVB, with an important Champions League home match against Athletic Club coming up on Wednesday, the injury doesn't appear to be serious.

“I assume it’s not so bad that he’ll miss the game against Athletic,” said Dortmund managing director for sport Lars Ricken in the mixed zone after his side’s 2–0 victory.

Reflecting on Dortmund’s win – their fourth straight in the Bundesliga – Ricken highlighted the team’s progress:

“This is no longer just a snapshot, but really a very strong development towards consistency and stability. After the Club World Cup, our goal was to establish ourselves at the top right away and stay there – not like in past years when we had to play catch-up. So far, we’ve managed that in an impressive way.

“But we also saw today that nobody can afford to think about doing a little less. Ten seconds before we scored the 1–0 goal, Mainz could have made it 1–0. Then it could have been a completely different game.”

Dortmund are second in the Bundesliga, two points behind Bayern Munich.
