When Bayer Leverkusen's squad for the Champions League was announced on Wednesday, there was a notable absentee.

Jonas Hofmann, one of the most experienced players in the team with 275 Bundesliga appearances, has been left out.

After playing an important part in Leverkusen's double-winning campaign, Hofmann slipped down the pecking order under Xabi Alonso last season.

He had hoped to regain importance following Xabi's departure, but the exclusion from the European squad is a blow to the 33-year-old.

Martin Terrier and Jeanuel Belocian, who are still working their way back from long-term injuries, and young striker Alejo Sarco were also left out of the squad.

Meanwhile, all of Leverkusen's 13 summer signings have been registered for Europe's premier club competition.

Die Werkself begin their Champions League campaign away against FC Copenhagen on September 18.
