Xabi Alonso could end up at Real Madrid, Leverkusen chief admits

Bayer Leverkusen chief executive Fernando Carro says it's "possible" that Xabi Alonso will end up coaching Real Madrid at some point in his career.

After months of speculation, Xabi Alonso committed himself to Bayer Leverkusen for next season towards the end of March.

However, the club's management are well aware that it will be difficult to keep the Spaniard in the long term.

One of the clubs with which Xabi Alonso has been linked is Real Madrid, and Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro believes there is a chance that the Spaniard could return to his former side as a coach in the future.

"It is possible that at some point in his coaching career he will manage Real Madrid," Carro told AS.

"There are a lot of clubs interested, that's how it is, which doesn't mean that in the future he can't coach some of the clubs mentioned, especially his former teams as a player. But he feels comfortable here, otherwise he wouldn't continue. We will maintain our ambition to play in the Champions League next year," Carro also said in the interview.

Obviously we are very happy with him. It's a good situation for all parties and I think it's a win-win situation for both of us. This is a project we started with him and it is very important that he continues. But Xabi also knows what he has with Leverkusen as a club, it's not just us who know what we have with him as a coach. It's good for both of us to continue working together."
