Mainz 05 have completed the signing of Japanese midfielder Sota Kawasaki on a season-long loan from Kyoto Sanga, with an option to make the move permanent.

The 23-year-old arrives in the Bundesliga after establishing himself as a key figure at Kyoto, where he captained the side despite his young age.

“Sota Kawasaki is a very versatile player,” said Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert.

“He brings technique, two-footedness, and stamina. What stood out to us was his relentless pressing and willingness to harass opponents high up the pitch that fits perfectly with our philosophy.”

Kawasaki has represented Japan at youth level 17 times and featured in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

He was recently called up to the senior national team, but delayed his debut to finalize the move to Germany.

“I followed Mainz 05 last season and really liked their attacking style and aggressive pressing,” Kawasaki said.

“I’m excited to now be a part of that on the pitch, to meet the fans, and to experience the Bundesliga atmosphere first-hand.”
