Acknowledged by 1. FC Union Berlin sporting director Oliver Ruhnert to have committed a dirty foul worthy of a long suspension, Union squad skipper Rani Khedira will indeed be banned for the next three league fixtures after the DFB handed down its judgement on the matter Monday evening. Khedira remains eligible to play in Union's round DFB Pokal tie tomorrow evening in Stuttgart, as well as the upcoming UCL fixture in Naples.

The 29-year-old must nevertheless sit out forthcoming league matches against Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, and (after the international break) FC Augsburg. The Eisernen squad captain had only just returned to Urs Fischer's team to start twice after having missed the start of the season with injury. Khedira has issued an apology to the team, fans, and the player he fouled (Romano Schmid), calling his actions "stupid" in a Saturday post-match-interview.
