Lothar Matthäus expects Julian Nagelsmann to be replaced as Germany coach following Monday’s shock World Cup elimination to Paraguay in the round of 32.

Nagelsmann said after the game that he's willing to see out his contract, which runs until after the 2028 European Championship, but Matthäus believes a change will be made.

"I believe that after this World Cup, we have to continue with a new coach. This was simply too much. There's probably a lot that needs to be reviewed, on the pitch and off it," Matthäus told Bild.

The German legend described Germany’s performance against Paraguay as “subpar”.

"A game like that can happen. But we played a catastrophe game against Ecuador already," Matthäus said, referring to Germany's 2-1 group-stage defeat.

"When you look at everything as a whole: I'm not sad. I'm surprised that you can be eliminated against such a weak team. But I'm not sad because of the performance we showed."
