Lucas Hernandez struggled to nail down a starting berth at Bayern München after arriving for a club-record fee of €80 million last summer, but this season has seen him move into the starting eleven at the expense of Alphonso Davies, who is currently sidelined with an ankle injury.

Speaking in an interview with France Football, the 24-year-old has reflected on his difficult first season in Germany and the competition from Davies.

"I still have four years left on my contract. I want to make a name for myself here and be part of the team in the long term," the French international explained.

"Even in the difficult situation I found myself in last season, I always saw myself with Bayern. I have always felt the club's confidence in me, from the management, the coach and my teammates.

"With his speed, technical ability and positional play, [Davies] emerged as the best left-back in the world. Personally, I need competition to be able to progress."

Davies is expected to make his return from injury in December.
