Magdeburg will compete in 2. Bundesliga for the fifth time in a row after they clinched their place on the final matchday. Eintracht Braunschweig’s defeat to the champions Schalke and Fortuna Düsseldorf’s collapse in Fürth helped Magdeburg, although they also lost to Kaiserslautern.

Marlon Ritter scored the only goal of the game from the spot three minutes after the hour mark. In an evenly-contested match, both teams had chances as Kaiserslautern finally ended their campaign with back-to-back wins.

Torsten Lieberknecht’s side have equal points (52) with Darmstadt, but they had to settle for a sixth-place finish on goal difference. Similarly, Magdeburg finished the season in 14th spot with Arminia Bielefeld sitting above them on goal difference following a 6-1 victory over Darmstadt.
