Dortmund native and former BVB academy man Marvin Ducksch spoke about the anticipation of returning to play against his hometown club at a Wednesday presser.

There was a time when current SV Werder Bremen attacker Marvin Ducksch worked alongside the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang. Once regarded as one of the most promising players in the BVB pipeline, the 28-year-old made six appearances under Dortmund trainer Jürgen Klopp during the 2013/14 campaign.

Unfortunately, that would constitute to extent of Ducksch's involvement with his hometown cub. By the next year, he was fighting to get into the squad of loan club SC Paderborn 07. The season after that, Dortmund placed him back with the reserves; at that time playing in Germany's fourth footballing tier.

"I did everything I could at the time to give myself a chance to advance," Ducksch mused when speaking to assembled members of the press on Wednesday, "I spent my entire youth there and grew up there. For me, there was only one club back then."

It's undoubtedly been a long road back for the former German youth international. After stints with FC St. Pauli, Holstein Kiel, and Hannover 96, Ducksch is finally back in Germany's top footballing flight. He last played at this level with Fortuna Düsseldorf during the 2018/19 season.

Widely considered one of the primary reasons why Werder were able to achieve promotion last season and currently viewed as one half of one of the most exciting striking tandems in the Bundesliga, Ducksch made clear that a light injury shouldn't preclude his chances of representing his current club in what, for him, counts as a big homecoming match on Saturday.

"Everything looks good," Ducksch said of his recent struggles with some muscular issues, "For me, it's a highlight game of the season to perform in front of more than 80,000 fans at Signal Iduna Park. I have mixed emotions, but am really looking forward to it."

Ducksch revealed with something of a wry smile that he had been bombarded by ticket requests from family and friends still living in the vicinity of his Ruhrpott rearing ground.

"I want to focus on the game," the striker noted after explaining that he stood zero chance of accommodating all of the requests, "I'm really intrigued about how it's going to go."
