The game against RB Leipzig can determine Borussia Dortmund’s season

After nine wins in a row across all competitions in 2023, Borussia Dortmund find themselves in a good position to bring back the league title to the Signal Iduna Park for the first time since the 2011/12 season. To do that, they need to keep their winning streak going as they face a tricky tie against RB Leipzig on Friday.

The Black and Yellows are in a brilliant run of form in 2023. Edin Terzic’s side have won all 9 games in all competitions this calendar year which includes a DFB Pokal win against Bochum and a Champions League victory against Chelsea. This makes Borussia Dortmund the only side to win all their games among Europe’s Top 10 leagues.

The stats further cement how dominant BVB has been in 2023. According to Bundesliga.com, they have the most goals (20), most shots (177), fewest goals conceded (6) and most goals by substitutes (5) in the Bundesliga. When we compare the numbers across Europe, Dortmund have the most goals per game (2.55) and the most shots per game (17.1).

Everything suggests that BVB are in the form of their life and are in a good position to bring back the league title to the Signal Iduna Park for the first time since the 2011/12 season. To do that, they need to keep their winning streak going as they face a tricky tie against RB Leipzig on Friday. Winning this game will not only prove the title credentials of this side but will also help them achieve 8 league wins in a row, something Jürgen Klopp’s title-winning side last achieved.

RB Leipzig will offer a stern test for BVB. Marco Rose’s side have already beaten the Black and Yellows 3-0 in the reverse fixture, which was the German coach’s first game in charge of the Red bull backed club. Last season, Leipzig also got an astounding 4-1 win against BVB away from home and will be looking to punish the second-placed side again to put a dent in their chase for the league title.

On Thursday popular German newspaper BILD published a story about the way how Marco Rose left Borussia Dortmund at the end of last season. The report stated that no one including the manager and players saw the dismissal coming.

It looks like there is no love lost between Rose and the BVB board and he will be looking to take revenge against his old side. Ahead of the game, he stated that his side will work to stop the good momentum of Borussia Dortmund.

"We will need to be courageous and produce a top performance on Friday. We will have to work hard off the ball to deal with the power and force that Dortmund have going forward."

For Borussia Dortmund, anything other than a win will be a disappointment as Bayern are expected to win their game against Stuttgart on Saturday. The side is performing at the highest level and there doesn’t seem to be a single area of weakness at the moment.

Even players like Emre Can who have been struggling since signing in January 2020 is contributing positively. The return of Marco Reus has also been welcome news and has boosted the creativity of the side.

The biggest question so far for BVB has been the fact that BVB has truly been tested in their winning run so far this year. Their wins against Augsburg and Mainz came late on and could’ve easily ended in a draw, the other wins were mostly against teams that aren’t either on top form or at the level of BVB.

But Leipzig tick all the boxes of a challenging tie given their position in the table and run of form this season. This game can tell us more about how strong this BVB side are and whether they are well-placed to topple Bayern off of their comfortable status as German champions.
