With the summer transfer window closed, Bayern Munich can now turn their attention to another pressing matter: extending the contract of key defender Dayot Upamecano, which expires in 2026.

According to Bild, Bayern are keen to resume talks with the centre-back, which have stalled for some time due to differing salary expectations.

Upamecano, who is reportedly insisting on including a release clause in his potential new deal, is generally said to be happy at Bayern, but is highly regarded by other European top clubs.

Real Madrid are understood to be monitoring the situation and could look to sign Upamecano on a free transfer next summer.

Bayern faced a similar situation in 2021 when David Alaba left as a free agent to join Real, and they are likely eager to avoid a repeat.
