Speaking to Goal.com and Spox.com, the current RB Leipzig player now reflects on his time at the Signal Iduna Park.
"I came to the BVB at a difficult time. We were sitting 17th in the league. Everything wasn't going as it should. We finished eighth in the end, but generally, it was a very difficult season for us and for me personally. I came from Salzburg to Dortmund. That was a huge leap for me. Nevertheless, I played almost every game and felt well," Kampl said.
In August 2015, Kampl asked Thomas Tuchel, who was Dortmund's coach at the time, for permission to be reunited with his former coach Roger Schmidt at Bayer Leverkusen.
"Roger Schmidt really wanted to bring me to Leverkusen. He was like a mentor to me in Salzburg. So I asked Mr. Tuchel for permission to join Roger Schmidt. He understood that a player sometimes meets a coach in his career to whom he develops a special bond," Kampl said and added:
"For me, it was the best decision to go to Leverkusen, because I really blossomed there again. That is why I'm grateful to Mr. Tuchel to this day."
Kampl stayed at Leverkusen for two seasons before he joined RB Leipzig in August 2017.
