Frank Baumann has confirmed Schalke 04's interest in FC Zurich central defender Nikola Katic.

Speaking at the Gelsenkirchen club's press conference introducing new coach Miron Muslic, the sporting director said:

“We have been very clear about what certain position profiles should look like, and what leadership skills we need within the group.

“And it's also known that we still have a need in our central defense. It's no secret that Nikola is a player we're considering,” Baumann added.

The Royal Blues are said to be making intensive efforts to sign the 28-year-old. Last season, Katic was on loan at Plymouth Argyle under Muslic.

The new S04 coach can easily imagine working with him again: “I know him, of course, his profile, but above all, I know his character.

"Nikola is a leader, a leading personality; he could be a great fit for us,” he added.
